So where did the concept of 420 come from? What does it mean? Why those particular numbers? And how did it spread around the world?<\/p>\r\n

Theories Of The 420\u00a0Meaning<\/h3>\r\n

Before we delve into the true origins of April 20, we\u2019ll examine some of the strange, outlandish, and downright false theories of the 420 meaning.<\/p>\r\n

H.P. Lovecraft<\/h3>\r\n

Back in 1939, H.P. Lovecraft and Kenneth Sterling<\/a> wrote In The Walls Of Eryx<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

In this short story, Lovecraft writes briefly about \u201ccurious mirage-plants\u201d that alter the narrator\u2019s perception of reality at around 4:20.<\/p>\r\n

This would be a great explanation because we love us some Lovecraft (Cthulhu fhtagn!), but the logistics of this theory just don\u2019t jive.<\/p>\r\n

First, Lovecraft doesn\u2019t elaborate about whether it\u2019s 4:20 a.m. or 4:20 p.m. For some stoners, we guess it wouldn\u2019t matter, but for us long-timers (read \u201cold\u201d), we\u2019re going to be pretty much comatose in our beds at 4:20 a.m. unless something is really, REALLY wrong.<\/p>\r\n

Second, since Lovecraft lived on the east coast of the United States, we can only assume he was referring to 4:20 Eastern (daylight savings wasn\u2019t a standard thing at that time).<\/p>\r\n

And 4:20 Eastern would make it 3:20 Central, 2:20 Mountain, and 1:20 Pacific (although we still don\u2019t know if it was early morning or late afternoon).<\/p>\r\n

So although Lovecraft\u2019s<\/a> story is one of the earliest mentions of psychedelia and 4:20 together in one place, it\u2019s highly unlikely that he can claim responsibility for creating 420.<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s a fun theory, but it\u2019s false.<\/p>\r\n

Dutch Teatime<\/h3>\r\n

Another popular theory holds that 4:20 (or 16:20 for 24-hour-clock enthusiasts) is standard teatime in Holland, the Netherlands.<\/p>\r\n

Geographically speaking, Holland is a region on the western coast of the Netherlands that includes the city of Amsterdam.<\/p>\r\n

And, as all good stoners know, Amsterdam is like Mecca for cannaenthusiasts.<\/p>\r\n

Because of this link to the forward-thinking city that pioneered cannabis legalization back in the 1970s (yes, it\u2019s been legal there for almost half a century), it\u2019s as good an explanation as any for the real 420 meaning.<\/p>\r\n

Sadly, though, it\u2019s just as false as the Lovecraft connection.<\/p>\r\n

420 Active Chemicals<\/h3>\r\n

Some believe that the history of the 420 meaning got its start because there are 420<\/a> active chemicals in cannabis.<\/p>\r\n

This is just plain wrong. There are way more than 420 active chemicals in your standard marijuana plant.<\/p>\r\n

And of those 420, only about 70 or so are cannabinoids unique to your favorite strain. The rest are just regular organic molecules common to pretty much every plant on the planet.<\/p>\r\n

So, as a theory for the origin of 420, this explanation doesn\u2019t hold water and sounds like something you would hear third- or fourth-hand from your uncle\u2019s cousin\u2019s friend\u2019s 14-year-old niece.<\/p>\r\n

If someone tries to pass this off as cannon at your next smoke sesh, laugh scornfully in their face, point fingers derisively, and make them clean the gunk out of your bong <\/a>to teach them a lesson about gullibility.<\/p>\r\n

Adolf Hitler\u2019s\u00a0Birthday<\/h3>\r\n

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, but that\u2019s a tenuous connection to the pot-smoking revelry that 420 has become today.<\/p>\r\n

Even if this explanation for the 420 meaning were even remotely true\u200a\u2014\u200awhich it\u2019s NOT\u200a\u2014\u200awe\u2019re not sure why it would have gotten a start in the first place.<\/p>\r\n

Other than the birthdate thing, no one wants to honor one of the men responsible for some of the worst years western civilization has ever faced.<\/p>\r\n

Plus, there\u2019s absolutely no connection between Hitler and the wacky weed\u200a\u2014\u200aalthough the world probably would have been a much better place if he\u2019d have toked a fatty once or twice and just chilled the eff out.<\/p>\r\n

This theory is complete bunk.<\/p>\r\n

A Bob Dylan\u00a0Song<\/h3>\r\n

Back in 1966, Bob Dylan released<\/a> the song \u201cRainy Day Women #12 & 35\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

In the said song, he sings extensively about getting stoned and ends with the now-famous chorus, \u201cEverybody must get stoned!\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Along with the fairly obvious connotations, the band\u200a\u2014\u200aand Dylan himself\u200a\u2014\u200asound like they\u2019re high as a kite.<\/p>\r\n

Plus, 12 x 35 = 420. Coincidence? Unfortunately, yes. While this is one of the most plausible theories for 420\u2019s meaning, it\u2019s also false.<\/p>\r\n

Dylan himself says that he was singing about being stoned in the Biblical sense of the word\u200a\u2014\u200apeople hurling rocks at you\u200a\u2014\u200anot about puffing a blunt<\/a> and scarfing down Funyons and Pixie Sticks.<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s easy to see how well-meaning stoners could have run with their own understanding of \u201cEverybody must get stoned!\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200ait is pretty obvious, after all\u200a\u2014\u200abut there\u2019s no historical proof this is where 420 got its start.<\/p>\r\n

California Police\u00a0Code<\/h3>\r\n

Another plausible explanation for the origins of 420 goes back to the California police codes of the 1970s.<\/p>\r\n

Much like the term 5150\u200a\u2014\u200athe California law-enforcement code applied to people who are considered threateningly unstable or \u201ccrazy\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200athat was co-opted by the band Van Halen for the name of their seventh album, legend has it that 420 was the police code for \u201cmarijuana smoking.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

As cool as it would be to take \u201cthe man\u2019s\u201d own codes, throw them back in their faces, and create a day to celebrate marijuana openly, this theory is false as well.<\/p>\r\n

R.I.P. Bob\u00a0Marley<\/h3>\r\n

Some folks\u200a\u2014\u200adon\u2019t ask us who\u200a\u2014\u200aswear that The Right Honorable Robert \u201cBob\u201d Marley died on April 20 and that the current 420 celebration is a tribute to this cannabis icon.<\/p>\r\n

Unfortunately, this theory isn\u2019t true either. Mr. Marley passed away on May 11 (511), not April 20.<\/p>\r\n

You can\u200a\u2014\u200aand should\u200a\u2014\u200astill blaze a bong in honor of the pioneer of ganja culture; just don\u2019t claim he\u2019s the reason for 420.<\/p>\r\n

The Real History Of\u00a0420<\/h3>\r\n

The real story of 420\u2019s meaning<\/strong> dates back to San Rafael High School (in San Rafael, California) in the 1970s and a group of five friends known as the Waldos.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cWhy Waldos?\u201d you ask. Because they used to hang out by a wall outside the school. Get it? Wall-dos? Waldos? Anyway\u2026<\/p>\r\n

During harvest time in the fall of 1971, the Waldos heard a rumor that a member of the Coast Guard had planted a cannabis crop and, because he had shipped out, could no longer tend the buds.<\/p>\r\n

They decided to search for the lost crop after practice (they were all high school athletes) and arranged to meet at the Louis Pasteur statue on campus at 4:20 p.m.<\/p>\r\n

This went on for several weeks and they took to reminding each other of their after-school plans by saying, \u201c4:20 Louis.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Eventually, they dropped the \u201cLouis\u201d completely and started using 420 as a way to refer to their pot-smoking activities without squares being any the wiser.<\/p>\r\n

They never did find the secret stash, and it would have stopped there\u200a\u2014\u200awith a group of high school friends in California\u200a\u2014\u200aif it weren\u2019t for a fortunate coincidence and one of the most iconic rock bands of all time: The Grateful Dead.<\/p>\r\n

By the early 1970s, the Dead had moved their rehearsal space from The Haight in San Francisco to the Marin County hills\u200a\u2014\u200ajust blocks from the Waldos\u2019 school.<\/p>\r\n

In addition to being within walking distance of the heart of the counterculture, one of the Waldos\u2019 dads managed real estate for the band, and another Waldo\u2019s older brother was good friends with Dead bassist Phil Lesh.<\/p>\r\n

Because of this connection, the Waldos used to hang out in close proximity to the band where they, no doubt, used the term 420 quite often.<\/p>\r\n

From there, 420 spread through the roadies, band members, and fans until it was common in the underground language of the Dead Head community.<\/p>\r\n

In the late 80s and early 90s, reporters from the magazine High Times heard the term 420 (in the form of a flyer that said, \u201cWe are going to meet at 4:20 on 4\/20 for 420-in in Marin County\u2026\u201d) while attending a concert in Oakland, California.<\/p>\r\n

High Times took the story, ran with it, and started incorporating 420 into everything they did (eventually purchasing the web address 420.com).<\/p>\r\n

As cannabis culture began to grow in the United States and around the world, the idea of 420 continued to gain popularity.<\/p>\r\n

With the legalization of marijuana in states across the union, 420 <\/a>parties spread like wildfire and the celebration took off from there and transformed into the ganja-fest that it is today.<\/p>\r\n
